The Maritime Academy of Nigeria is a federally owned educational institute in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Originally called the Nautical College of Nigeria, it was established in 1979 to educate and train shipboard officers, ratings and shore-based management personnel. The first batch of cadets graduated in 1983.

  • 1. ISM (International Safety Management Code):

The aim of this course is to cause the participants to understand the provisions/requirments of the International Safety Management(ISM) Code and participate in Safety Management System activities

This course is open to seafarers, ship owners, personnel of maritime/shipping and allied Industries, port and terminal operators.

  • 2. Refresher International Safety Management (ISM) Code:

The aim of this course is to enable participants to maintain their knowledge of the provisions/requirments of the International Safety Management(ISM) Code and participate in Safety Management System activities

This course is open to seafarers, ship owners, personnel of Maritime/shipping and allied industries, port and terminal operators who were previously issued a certificate in International Safety Management (ISM) code.

  • 3. DSD (Designated Security (Officer or Duties)):

The aim of this course is to enable seafarers acquire the competences for performing Designated Security Duties on board ship as specified in Table A-VI/6-2 of the STCW Convention as amended

  • This program is open to:
  • – Candidates not less than 16 years
  • – Holders of Senior Certificate
  • – Holder of Certificate of Proficiency in Security Awareness
  • – Candidate Medically fit to be employed at sea
  • 4. MSC (Maritime Security Course for Officers)

This course is open to seafarers, ship owners, personnel of Maritime/Shipping and allied Industries, port and terminal owners, operators and their personnel at the senior level.

  • 5. Refresher Maritime Security Course (MSC):

This course is open to Seafarers, Ship owners, Personnel of Maritime/Shipping and allied Industries, port and terminal owners, Operators and other personnel at the senior level who were previously issued a certificate in maritime security.

  • 6. Port Facility Security Officer Course (PFSO):

It is assume that those attending this course will be person employed (or to be employed) by a port facility operator and that they are likely to be designated as Port Facility Security Officer. Participants are expected to have undertaken an awareness course on the ISPS Code.

  • 7. Ship Security Officer Course (SSO):

Participants in this course should have approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months or appropriate seagoing service and knowledge of ship operations. Also participants should have completed either the STCW Security Awareness Course (Section A-VI/6(4)) or the STCW Designated Security Duties Course (Section A-VI/6(6-8)).

  • 8. Basic Safety Training:
  • – Basic Fire Fighting (BFPB)
  • – Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
  • – Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
  • – Elementary First Aid (EFA)

 


These courses meets the mandatory minimum requirements for seafarers for familiarization, basic safety training and instruction in accordance with the 2010 amendments to STCW Convention and Section A-VI/1 of STCW Code

These courses are principally intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship. There are no particular educational requirements. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.

  • 9. Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boat):

The aim of this course is to provide the training for candidates to launch and take charge of survival craft and/or rescue boat in emergency situations, in accordance with:
– Regulation VI/2 of the Annex to the STCW Convention, Section A-VI/2 & Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW code
– SOLAS Chapter III as amended

For admission to the course seafarers must not less than 18 years of age and certified by a Doctor to be in good health. In addition, they must have;

  • – Proof of medical fitness
  • – Approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months or have attended an approved training course and have approved sea going service of not less than six months.
  • – A certificate of proficiency in STCW Basic training.
  • 10. Proficiency in Survival refresher Craft and Rescue Boats (other than fast rescue boat):

The aim of this course is to provide refresher training for candidates to launch and take charge of survival craft and/or rescue boat in emergency situations, in accordance with:
– Regulation VI/2 of the Annex to the STCW Convention, Section A-VI/2 & Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW code
– SOLAS Chapter III as amended

– This course is open to seafarers who hold an expired certificate of proficiency in survival craft and rescue boat (other than fast rescue boats) and had served on a ship for a period of not less than two years since obtaining the certificate.
– The course instructor may, after consideration of the candidate experience and presented documents, allow a candidate to join the PSCRB course on the 3rd day. otherwise, the candidates should undertake the full course

  • 11. Security Awareness Training:
  • The aim of this course is to enable the seafarer or participant aiming to be employed on board a ship to acquire the competence to undertake the security awareness tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in Column 1 of Table A-VI/6-1 of the STCW Conventiond as amended
    This programme is open to:
  • – Candidate not less than 16 years
  • – Holder of Senior School Certificate
  • – Candidate medically fit to be employed at sea

  • 12. Advance Fire Fighting:

This course aims to provide the training in advanced fire fighting in accordance with Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code. The emphasis of the training is in organisation tactics and command

This course is open to seafarers who have completed basic training in fire prevention and fire fighting. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.

  • 13. Refresher Advance Fire Fighting:

This course aims to provide refresher training in advanced fire fighting in accordance with Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code. The course is designed to meet the provisions of Section A-VI/3 paragraph 5 which requires seafarers who qualified in accordance with paragraph 4 in advanced fire fighting to, every five years provide evidence of having maintained the required standards of competence.

This course is open to seafarers who held a Certificate of Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting and had served on a ship for a period not less than two years since obtaining the certificate.

  • 14. Proficiency in Medical First Aid:

This course aims to provide the training for candidates to provide medical First aid inthe event of accident or illness on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code

Admission to the course, seafarers should have completed IMO Model Course No. 1.13, Elementary First Aid or attained a similar standard in elementary first aid.

  • 15. Proficiency in Medical Care on board Ship:

This course is to provide the training for seafarers designated to provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board, in accordance with Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code

This course is open to seafarers to be designated in charge of medical care on board ships. Those entering the course should have successfully completed training in medical first aid on board ship, such as specialize with IMO Model Course No. 1.14, medical first aid.

  • 16. Refresher Proficiency in Medical Care on Boat Ship:

This course is to provide the refresher training for seafarers designated to provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board, in accordance with Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code

This course is also open to seafarers who have previously completed STCW Medical Care training (IMO Model Course 1.15) and wish to comply with the recommendation in the IMO/ILO Document of Guidance, 1985, that a refresher course should be undertaken at interval of approximately five years to demonstrate the maintenance of the competency requirements Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code

  • 17. Oil Chemical Tanker Familarization and Cargo Operation(OCTCO):

This course provides training for officers and ratings. The objective is to meet the training requirements of regulation V/1-1 paragraph 2-2 of the International Convention od Standards of Training, Certifcation and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, as amended

This course is principally intended for candidates for certification for basic training for oil and chemical cargo operations as specified in section A-V/1-1 paragraph 1 of the STCW Code, as amended.
