Ondo State governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has described the state-owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, AAUA, as an institution that is on a good footing. He also pledged continued support for the institution.
The Governor, who is also the Visitor to AAUA, said this during the third Founder’s Day Lecture of the University of Medical Sciences, (UNIMED), Ondo, in Ondo State. He added that the government has no plan to merge the three state-owned universities as being suggested in some quarters.
Akeredolu said, “We’ll continue to support our educational institutions, from the primary schools to tertiary institutions. It is not possible to abandon a special university like UNIMED. It is the first University of Medical Sciences in Nigeria. A university that deals in specialized areas, can we afford to say we are not supporting it?
“There have been arguments to merge all three state-owned universities, but we will continue to try to retain all three. That is my resolve as the Governor. OSUSTECH is also a good university for what it was established for because Science and Technology must be the goal too, so we cannot afford to also cancel it. AAUA is also on a good footing, we just need to continue to support them,” the governor said.
Ondo State currently maintains three universities namely UNIMED; Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OSUSTECH); and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, with a Polytechnic in Owo.
The Governor, who said education is important to the system, disclosed that teachers would soon be employed and trained to fill the gaps in the secondary schools.
According to Governor Akeredolu,” We are concerned about building our education, our own idea is to improve on the schools we have. Better classrooms for our students so that people will go to school, and we make sure it is secured. That is why we have started fencing all our primary schools because of the spate of insecurity that we face.
“In most of our primary schools, we have modern toilets, water, and we teach sanitation and hygiene. We also have solar to provide lights for the classrooms. These are the things we try to do to improve education in this state.”

The World Can Get the Brightest, Best from AAUA – Pro Chancellor

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, has expressed confidence in the University to produce some of the best and brightest minds capable of changing the world.
Dr. Abayomi said this on Thursday while the University was playing host to a team of Engineers and Property Developers from ABYL Integrated Global Services from Canada, with whom AAUA is partnering. He expressed confidence that the partnership will birth massive transformation for the University.
He said “It is possible to produce the best and the brightest from Adekunle Ajasin University that will change the world. We have seen your interest in us and I also believe you have seen our eagerness to rise. If we work together with some level of understanding, I believe we can make this university an institution not just of our today but our tomorrow.”
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, who received officials of ABYL Integrated Global Services in his office, remarked on the prospects of the partnership as he assured the Canadian team of a rewarding partnership.
His words, “When you check the factors that distinguish top universities in the world, you’d discover that apart from the quality of academic programmes, the quality of their infrastructural facilities is another important factor. Now with your presence here, your presentation and your vast experience, I believe we can leverage on that to move to the level we want. I want to say that we are highly interested in your services. We have a strong conviction that this partnership will work”.
Professor Ajibefun, who lamented the inability of the University to provide on-campus accommodation for majority of its students and staff, said the challenge will be surmounted through the budding partnership between the university and the Canadian firm.
In his words, “As a growing university we have a lot of potential. Within a short period of time, our student population has grown dramatically. We have about 20,000 students now; I want to tell you that less than five percent of our students live on campus because there is no facility on campus to accommodate them. For members of staff, only the Vice Chancellor lives on campus because there are no facilities to accommodate other members of staff. So, we are eager to developand we want to make our campus lively, we want everything that will properly define us as a 21st Century University.”
The leader of the ABYL Integrated Global Services team, Mr. Aman Bhalla, also expressed good feelings about the budding partnership and the opportunity to be part of the imminent transformation of Adekunle Ajasin University.
He appreciated the university’s hospitality and restated the commitment of his team to work with the University. Other members of the group at the meeting are, Mr. Kirwin Lalla, Brian Hussain, and Mr. Yele Odofin-Bello.
